Tragedy in the North: Four Killed in Manitoba Float Plane Crash

A weekend hunting trip turned tragic when a float-equipped DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver crashed near Makepeace Lake, killing four passengers from St. Theresa Point First Nation.

RCMP say the aircraft went down about 40 kilometres south of the remote fly-in community on Saturday evening. Two men, aged 53 and 49, and two women, both 50, were pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old pilot, the sole survivor, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities were alerted to the crash through an iPhone satellite emergency notification, which provided precise coordinates. A Mountie reached the site after being flown in by helicopter and hiking 500 metres in darkness. Search-and-rescue technicians from CFB Trenton parachuted in to assist the injured pilot.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. The aircraft belonged to Alair MHA Enterprises, which operates out of St. Theresa Point.

Community leaders, including Chief Raymond Flett, expressed deep sorrow, noting the victims were two couples with young children. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs extended condolences, saying the loss is felt “across all our Nations”.
