Tragedy Strikes Richmond Hill Daycare as SUV Plows Into Building
Police attend the scene where an SUV crashed into a daycare killing a 1 1/2-year-old child in Richmond Hill, Ont. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.
A devastating incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when an SUV crashed into a daycare near Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive, killing a 1½-year-old child and injuring six others.
York Regional Police say the injured children, aged between 18 months and three years, were rushed to hospital, with one in critical condition. Three staff members also sustained injuries in the crash.
Authorities report that the driver, a man in his 70s, was arrested at the scene. Police believe the collision was not intentional, noting that the vehicle had been in the parking lot before suddenly driving through the front window of the daycare.
At the time of the crash, 96 children were inside the facility. All have since been accounted for, and parents were quickly notified. The scene was described as “chaotic” by police, with shattered glass and overturned furniture marking the impact zone.
Yonge Street was closed between Gamble Road and Brookside Road as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash.
This heartbreaking event has left the Richmond Hill community in shock, with grief and concern rippling through families and residents.
