Trump Confirms Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing Likely in Custody
President Donald Trump announced Friday that authorities have “with a high degree of certainty” apprehended the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The development comes just a day after federal and state officials released surveillance images and video of the alleged gunman, described as a college-aged male who blended into the crowd at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while addressing an outdoor audience as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” The attack, carried out in broad daylight, sent spectators fleeing in panic. Investigators believe the shooter fired a single round from a rooftop before fleeing on foot.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name or a possible motive. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed more than 7,000 tips had been received during the manhunt. Trump, who called the killing a “targeted event,” said Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Vice President JD Vance and his wife visited Kirk’s family on Thursday, and Trump has stated he plans to attend the funeral. Kirk’s body has been transported to Arizona, where his youth-focused political organization, Turning Point USA, is based.
