A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Trump Names Former Attorney as Top Prosecutor While Urging Bondi to Target Political Rivals

New York Attorney General Letitia James speaks during a press conference following a ruling against former U.S. President Donald Trump ordering him to pay $354.9 million and barring him from doing business in New York State for three years, in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., February 16, 2024.

President Donald Trump has appointed his former attorney, Lindsey Halligan, as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, a move that comes amid heightened pressure on Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue investigations against several of Trump’s political adversaries.

Halligan, who previously represented Trump in civil litigation following the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, will replace Erik Siebert, who resigned after resisting calls to bring charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump praised Bondi but urged her to act more aggressively, citing frustration that probes into figures such as James, Comey, and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff had not advanced. “Justice must be served, now,” Trump wrote.

The appointment underscores Trump’s determination to install loyalists in key prosecutorial roles as he seeks retribution against officials he accuses of weaponizing the justice system against him. Halligan’s nomination will still require Senate confirmation, though it remains unclear whether she will serve in an interim capacity until then.
