Trump Signals Breakthrough in Gaza Talks, Hostage Release Possible

President Donald Trump announced Friday that negotiations to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of hostages are nearing a breakthrough. Speaking before departing the White House for the Ryder Cup golf tournament in New York, Trump said, “It’s looking like we have a deal on Gaza. I think it’s a deal that gets the hostages back, it’s going to be a deal that ends the war.”

The remarks come ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. According to U.S. officials, the administration has circulated a 21-point Middle East peace plan to regional partners, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. The proposal reportedly calls for the return of all hostages, a halt to further Israeli strikes on Qatar, and renewed dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians aimed at “peaceful coexistence.”

The conflict, which began after Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel, has left more than 65,000 people dead in Gaza, according to local health officials, and much of the territory in ruins. Israeli authorities say 251 hostages were taken during the initial assault, with about 48 still in captivity, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

While Trump offered no timeline or details, his comments suggest that a potential framework for peace could soon emerge, though significant challenges remain.
