Amazon Web Services (AWS) is showing strong signs of recovery after a massive outage on October 20, 2025, that disrupted apps, websites, and services across the globe. The failure originated in AWS’s US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, one of its largest cloud hubs, and was linked to a DNS resolution issue affecting DynamoDB, a core database service.

The outage caused widespread disruptions, with millions of users unable to access platforms such as Snapchat, Fortnite, Coinbase, Robinhood, Reddit, and Duolingo. Even Amazon’s own services—including Prime Video, Alexa, and Ring—experienced slowdowns or downtime. Airports, banks, and financial apps also reported interruptions, underscoring the scale of the incident.

By early morning, AWS engineers had identified the root cause and began rolling out fixes. Within hours, the company reported “significant signs of recovery,” though some services continued to experience residual issues.

The outage has reignited debate about the internet’s heavy reliance on a handful of cloud providers. Experts warn that such incidents highlight the risks of centralization, as a single point of failure can ripple across industries worldwide.
