Belgian Authorities Foil Terror Plot Targeting Prime Minister

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever addresses the 80th United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York, U.S., September 25, 2025.

Belgian authorities announced they have disrupted a terrorist plot aimed at attacking Prime Minister Bart De Wever and other politicians. The federal prosecutor’s office confirmed that police in Antwerp arrested suspects during coordinated raids, uncovering materials resembling an improvised explosive device, steel balls, and evidence of plans to use a drone in the attack.

Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot described the discovery as “deeply shocking,” stressing that the incident highlights the ongoing reality of terrorist threats in Belgium. The suspects are being investigated for attempted terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.

This foiled plot comes against the backdrop of Belgium’s history with extremist violence, including the 2016 Brussels bombings and more recent attacks linked to radicalized individuals. Officials emphasized that vigilance remains essential as the country continues to strengthen its counterterrorism measures.
