Blaze Erupts at Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery, No Injuries Reported

An aerial view of Chevron crews attempting to extinguish a large fire and explosion that occurred at Chevron Refinery in El Segundo Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025.

A massive fire broke out late Thursday night in the jet fuel production unit at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery near Los Angeles, sending a towering fireball and thick smoke into the night sky. The blaze, which erupted in the facility’s Isomax 7 unit, was visible for miles and briefly raised concerns about fuel supplies in California’s tightly constrained energy market.

Chevron confirmed that all employees and contractors were safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Emergency crews from Chevron’s own fire department, along with responders from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach, worked through the night to contain the flames.

Officials said there was no immediate impact on operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which relies heavily on jet fuel from the refinery. Residents in nearby Manhattan Beach were advised to shelter in place until early Friday morning, though no evacuation orders were issued.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. State and federal safety agencies are expected to review the incident once the fire is fully extinguished.

The El Segundo refinery is Chevron’s second-largest in the United States, supplying about 20% of Southern California’s motor fuel and 40% of its jet fuel. Analysts noted that while the fire is unlikely to affect global oil markets, California gasoline prices could see upward pressure due to the state’s isolated fuel system.
