Canada and India Reset Ties with Ambitious Roadmap for Cooperation

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to discuss strengthening trade between the countries.

Canada and India have unveiled a fresh roadmap to strengthen bilateral relations, marking a significant step toward rebuilding trust after years of strained ties.

During her official visit to New Delhi, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The leaders agreed on a framework aimed at expanding cooperation in key sectors including trade, critical minerals, agriculture, energy, artificial intelligence, and civil nuclear collaboration.

The joint statement emphasized the importance of “calibrated measures to restore stability in the relationship,” highlighting a shared commitment to respect each other’s concerns and sensitivities. Both sides also agreed to resume ministerial-level discussions on trade and investment, reviving negotiations that have stalled multiple times since 2010.

Officials from both countries underscored that strengthening ties is essential in the face of global economic uncertainty and shifting geopolitical dynamics. The roadmap is seen as a chance to not only boost economic opportunities but also reinforce people-to-people connections between the two nations.

This renewed partnership signals a cautious but determined effort by Ottawa and New Delhi to move past recent tensions and chart a more constructive future together.
