Speaker Johnson Warns of Record-Breaking U.S. Government Shutdown

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., praises President Donald Trump's peacemaking efforts leading to a ceasefire pausing two years of war in the Gaza Strip, at the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Oct. 13, 2025.  House Speaker Mike Johnson has cautioned that the ongoing U.S. government shutdown could become the longest in the nation’s history, as the political standoff between Republicans and Democrats shows no signs of easing. Now in its 13th day, the shutdown has already shuttered federal offices, closed museums, and disrupted air travel across the country. Deadly Farmhouse Blast in Verona Claims Lives of Three Carabinieri

Italian Red Cross personnel and first responders are seen at the site of an explosion that destroyed a farmhouse and killed three Italian Carabinieri police officers in the town of Castel d'Azzano, about six miles southwest of Verona, Italy, Oct. 14, 2025.

An overnight police raid in northern Italy turned tragic when a powerful explosion ripped through a farmhouse in Castel d’Azzano, near Verona, killing three Carabinieri officers and injuring at least 12 others. The blast, which caused the building to collapse, was reportedly triggered by gas canisters inside the property.

Authorities said the officers were attempting to enforce an eviction order against residents who had resisted leaving the farmhouse for years. Italian media reported that three siblings lived in the building, and investigators are examining whether the explosion was deliberately set.

The force of the blast was so strong it was heard several kilometers away. Among the injured were seven firefighters who were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences, calling the deaths a “tragic loss” and extending support to the families of the fallen officers.

The incident has sparked national outrage and grief, with officials vowing a full investigation into what they described as a senseless act of violence against law enforcement.
