G7 Foreign Ministers Meet in Niagara to Hear Ukraine’s Plea Amid Escalating War

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario , for high-stakes talks with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister as Russia intensifies its assault on Ukraine’s power grid. The meeting, hosted by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand , comes at a critical moment as rolling blackouts sweep across Ukraine ahead of winter. Escalation Follows Summit Delay: Russia and Ukraine Trade Overnight Strikes

Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy overnight missile attacks just hours after the White House confirmed that a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin would not take place in the immediate future.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes killed six people, including two children, in Kyiv and surrounding areas, while also triggering widespread power outages across the country. In response, Ukraine’s military said it launched Franco-British Storm Shadow missiles at a chemical plant in Russia’s Bryansk region, escalating the cross-border confrontation.

The surge in violence came as diplomatic efforts faltered. Trump and Putin had previously agreed to meet in Hungary, but Washington later announced there were “no imminent plans” for such talks. Trump described the idea of a summit as potentially a “waste of time” amid Moscow’s refusal to consider a ceasefire

The renewed strikes underscore the fragile state of diplomacy and highlight how quickly battlefield dynamics can shift when negotiations stall.
