Fragile Calm as Gazans Return to Ruins After Ceasefire

After two years of relentless conflict, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has brought a fragile sense of relief to Gaza. Israeli forces began withdrawing from several areas on Friday, allowing thousands of displaced Palestinians to cautiously return to their neighborhoods. Many, however, found little more than rubble where their homes once stood.

“Thank God my house is still standing,” said one resident, while others described entire districts reduced to dust. Rescue workers rushed into previously inaccessible zones, recovering bodies and aiding survivors still trapped beneath debris.

The ceasefire, brokered with international support, includes provisions for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Humanitarian aid trucks carrying food, medicine, and emergency supplies are also preparing to enter the enclave, offering much-needed relief to civilians who have endured hunger, displacement, and medical shortages.

Despite the truce, sporadic gunfire and shelling were still reported, underscoring the fragility of the moment. For many Gazans, the ceasefire is not only a political milestone but also a deeply personal one—a chance to grieve, rebuild, and hope for a future beyond war.
