Ukraine Faces Deepening Power Shortages After Russian Strikes

A resident shows a journalist where a Russian drone struck the roof of an apartment building, depriving its residents of water, heat and electricity, in Kyiv. Ukraine is confronting one of its most severe energy shortfalls since the start of the full‑scale invasion, with the country currently able to supply only about 60% of its electricity needs. A new wave of Russian missile and drone attacks has heavily damaged power plants and transmission infrastructure across multiple regions, pushing the grid to the brink. Officials report that nearly every major power‑generating facility has been hit in recent weeks. Cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro have experienced rolling blackouts, leaving millions of residents coping with limited heating, lighting, and communications during the winter season. France Erupts in Nationwide Protests Over Austerity Plans

Tens of thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of France on October 2, 2025, in a powerful show of resistance against proposed government spending cuts. Organized by major trade unions including the CGT and CFDT, protests took place in over 240 cities and towns, with Paris, Dijon, Metz, Poitiers, and Montpellier among the key hotspots.

The unrest comes amid political uncertainty, as newly appointed Prime Minister SĂ©bastien Lecornu works to form a cabinet and navigate contentious budget negotiations. Protesters are demanding increased investment in public services, a reversal of pension reforms, and higher taxes on the wealthy. The proposed 2026 budget, which includes a €44 billion reduction in public spending, has sparked widespread concern over its impact on low- and middle-income households.

While the CGT union estimated turnout at nearly 600,000, the Interior Ministry reported a lower figure of 195,000, including 24,000 in Paris. Students blocked school entrances, and the Eiffel Tower was closed due to strike action, underscoring the scale of disruption.

Prime Minister Lecornu faces mounting pressure to deliver a budget that balances fiscal responsibility with social equity. As one protester in Nantes put it, “It costs us a day each time. But that’s how democracy normally advances”.
