From Gaza to Kyiv: Trump Turns Focus to Ending Russia-Ukraine War

President Donald Trump addresses in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, on October 13, 2025.

As a fragile ceasefire continues to hold in Gaza, U.S. President Donald Trump has shifted his attention to another global flashpoint: the war in Ukraine. Fresh off what he has described as a “historic breakthrough” in brokering peace between Israel and Hamas, Trump is now signaling that his administration will intensify efforts to bring Moscow and Kyiv to the negotiating table.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already urged Trump to replicate his Middle East diplomacy in Eastern Europe, stressing that “if one war can be stopped, others can be stopped as well”. The Kremlin, for its part, has cautiously welcomed Trump’s stated desire to pursue peace, though it has hinted that any settlement must involve concessions from Kyiv.

Trump has also claimed progress in rallying international partners, announcing that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to halt oil imports from Russia — a move that could reshape global energy markets and increase pressure on Moscow.

While optimism is growing in some quarters, analysts caution that the dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine conflict are far more complex than those in Gaza. Unlike Hamas, Russia remains a global power with significant leverage, making any peace deal far more difficult to achieve.

Still, Trump insists that the momentum from Gaza can be carried forward. “When peace is achieved in one part of the world, it brings hope for peace everywhere,” he said in remarks following the ceasefire announcement.
