U.S. Threatens Harsher Economic Pressure on Iran as Mediators Rush to Secure Second Ceasefire Talks

A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Gaza Flotilla Vessel Makes Unexpected Stop in Cyprus

An Israeli navy vessel escorts a vessel from the Global Sumud flotilla to Ashdod.

One of the boats from the Gaza Sumud flotilla, a coalition of more than 50 vessels attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, has docked in Cyprus.

According to Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the vessel entered Cypriot territorial waters late Thursday and requested permission to dock at Larnaca port, citing the need for resupply and humanitarian reasons. The boat carried 21 passengers, including two individuals with chronic health conditions who were promptly given medical attention upon arrival.

Authorities in Cyprus conducted full identification, document, and security checks, while also ensuring that the passengers’ basic needs were met. Consular assistance was provided for foreign nationals on board.

The docking comes amid heightened tensions in the eastern Mediterranean. Israel has intercepted and detained hundreds of activists from other flotilla boats attempting to reach Gaza, sparking international protests. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was among those detained, according to flotilla organizers.

While most of the flotilla has been stopped by Israeli forces, at least one other vessel, the Marinette, was reported to still be en route toward Gaza at the time of the Cypriot docking.
