Air Transat Faces Flight Suspensions Amid Pilot Strike Notice

Air Transat has announced it will gradually suspend flights starting Monday following a 72-hour strike notice issued by its pilots’ union. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing roughly 700 pilots, delivered the notice after nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations with the airline’s parent company, Transat A.T. Inc. Background The union filed the strike notice on Sunday, giving pilots the legal right to walk off the job as early as Wednesday. Last week, pilots voted 99% in favor of strike action , underscoring their frustration over stalled contract talks. ALPA leaders emphasized that pilots do not want to strike but feel compelled to act after management failed to meet demands for a modernized agreement. Gaza on the Brink: UN Warns of Famine as Death Toll Surpasses 67,000

Ahmed, a Palestinian boy, lost his two sisters, Saly and Seba, his parents, maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather in Israeli attacks during the war.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with more than 67,000 Palestinians killed since Israel launched its offensive in response to Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, according to figures cited by the United Nations and Gaza health authorities. Nearly a third of the dead are children, underscoring the devastating toll on civilians.

The UN has warned that famine conditions are already present in parts of Gaza, with over half a million people facing starvation. Aid agencies report that families are crammed into makeshift shelters, while only 14 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially functional. The destruction of infrastructure has left hundreds of thousands without access to clean water, food, or medical care.

Displacement is also at unprecedented levels. UN officials estimate that over 417,000 people have been forced to flee Gaza City in recent weeks alone, many of them displaced multiple times as bombardments continue. With nearly 193,000 buildings destroyed or damaged, the enclave’s population has little refuge left.

The UN Human Rights Office has expressed grave concern, warning that deliberate efforts to uproot Gaza’s population could amount to ethnic cleansing. Meanwhile, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system has confirmed that famine is spreading, calling the situation a “man-made disaster.”

As international pressure mounts, negotiations over a potential ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchange remain stalled, leaving millions of Palestinians trapped in what the UN Secretary-General has described as a “living hell.”
