Mass Displacement in Lebanon After Intensified Israeli Evacuation Warnings

Displaced people walk outside a school-turned-shelter, in Beirut Tens of thousands of Lebanese civilians have been forced into shelters after what officials described as “unprecedented” evacuation warnings issued by the Israeli military. Local authorities estimate that around 100,000 people have fled their homes in southern Lebanon within a short period, seeking safety in schools, public buildings, and makeshift community centers. The warnings follow a sharp escalation in cross‑border hostilities, with Israeli forces expanding the areas they instructed residents to evacuate. Greenpeace Blockade at Belgian LNG Terminal Forces Tanker Diversions

Greenpeace activists from 17 countries blockaded Belgium’s Zeebrugge LNG terminal on Thursday, forcing at least three tankers to divert. Protesters in kayaks, inflatables, and small craft occupied the channel, demanding an end to both Russian and U.S. LNG flows.

A blockade led by Greenpeace activists at Belgium’s Zeebrugge LNG terminal has prompted at least three liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers to divert their course, according to vessel tracking data from LSEG. The protest, which began Wednesday afternoon, is aimed at halting European Union imports of Russian LNG amid ongoing tensions over Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Activists from 17 countries used kayaks, liferafts, and a sailing boat to obstruct the terminal’s entrance, demanding an end to both Russian and U.S. LNG shipments. The tankers Megara and Rias Baixas Knutsen, carrying U.S. cargo, and LNG Phecda, loaded with Russian gas, were among those rerouted. The Arctic Voyager from Norway may also face delays.

Despite the disruption, terminal operator Fluxys reported no impact on internal operations or output flow. The protest is expected to continue through Sunday. Belgium, the EU’s second-largest importer of Russian LNG after France, received 2.3 million metric tons in the first eight months of 2025.

The EU is considering accelerating its ban on Russian LNG imports as part of its 19th sanctions package, potentially implementing the measure a year earlier than planned.
