Hamas and Israel Head to Egypt for High-Stakes Talks on Ceasefire and Hostage Release

The US' plan is the most advanced effort yet to halt the war, the longest and most destructive ever in generations of conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Hamas officials arrived in Egypt on Sunday ahead of indirect negotiations with Israel, in what the United States is calling the most advanced effort yet to end nearly two years of war in Gaza.

The talks, hosted in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, are centered on a U.S.-backed plan that seeks to halt fighting and secure the release of the remaining 48 hostages held in Gaza, about 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the coming days would be “critical,” stressing that the seriousness of Hamas would be tested by how quickly technical details on the hostage exchange are resolved. President Donald Trump has promoted a 20-point framework that includes a ceasefire, prisoner swaps, and a roadmap for Gaza’s future governance.

Hamas has accepted parts of the plan, including the release of hostages, but has resisted calls for disarmament. Israel, meanwhile, has signaled cautious optimism, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying he hopes to announce progress within days.

Mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. are pressing both sides to finalize a comprehensive deal rather than a phased approach, in hopes of preventing further delays. For families of hostages and civilians caught in the conflict, the outcome of these talks could mark a turning point in a war that has devastated Gaza and strained regional stability.
