Hurricane Melissa Intensifies to Category 4, Jamaica Braces for Impact

Waves break on the coast ahead of Hurricane Melissa, in Port Royal, Jamaica, October 25, 2025.

Hurricane Melissa has rapidly strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it churns through the Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). With maximum sustained winds near 140 mph (220 km/h), the storm poses a severe threat to Jamaica, where a Hurricane Warning is now in effect.

The NHC reported that Jamaica is already experiencing tropical storm-force winds and heavy rainfall, with conditions expected to deteriorate further through Monday and Tuesday. Forecast models suggest Melissa could intensify even more, potentially reaching Category 5 strength before making landfall.

Authorities in Jamaica, Haiti, and eastern Cuba have urged residents to take immediate precautions, warning of life-threatening flash floods, mudslides, and storm surges. Emergency shelters have been opened across the region, and disaster response teams are on high alert.

Meteorologists note that Melissa’s rapid intensification—jumping from Category 1 to Category 4 in less than 48 hours—underscores the increasing volatility of Atlantic storms in recent years.

As the storm edges closer, millions across the Caribbean remain in its path, facing what could be one of the most dangerous hurricanes of the season.
