Munich Airport Reopens After Overnight Drone Disruption Sparks Investigation

                                            Munich International Airport

Munich Airport, Germany’s second-busiest aviation hub, was forced to shut down overnight after multiple drone sightings disrupted operations and grounded flights.

German air traffic control halted departures and arrivals shortly after 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 2, 2025, citing safety concerns. The closure lasted nearly seven hours, stranding almost 3,000 passengers and diverting 15 incoming flights to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt. Seventeen scheduled departures were canceled.

Authorities confirmed that federal police deployed helicopters and other resources to track the drones, but no devices were recovered. Passengers spent the night in terminals, where airport staff provided cots, blankets, and refreshments.

Investigators are now probing the origins of the drones. German media reports suggest officials are exploring possible links to suspicious maritime activity in the Baltic Sea, raising concerns about espionage and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.

The incident follows a series of similar drone incursions at airports across Scandinavia in recent weeks, fueling broader European security concerns.

Munich Airport resumed normal operations at 5 a.m. Friday, but officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that protecting airspace remains a top priority.
