NBA Stars and Mobsters Accused in High-Tech Poker Scam

An NBA player and coach are among dozens of people arrested as part of a sweeping FBI investigation into illegal sports betting and allegedly rigged, mafia-linked poker games

Federal prosecutors have unveiled explosive indictments alleging that organized crime figures and NBA personalities conspired to rig high-stakes poker games, cheating wealthy players out of millions.

According to court documents, the scheme relied on cutting-edge technology such as X-ray poker tables, hidden cameras, and contact lenses capable of reading marked cards. These tools gave insiders an unbeatable edge, ensuring that unsuspecting “high rollers” had virtually no chance of winning.

The indictment names several prominent figures, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach and NBA Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups, as well as former NBA player Damon Jones. Prosecutors allege that the presence of basketball stars was used as bait to lure victims into the games, which were secretly controlled by members of La Cosa Nostra crime families.

Authorities estimate that the operation siphoned off at least $7 million, with some individuals losing more than $1.8 million in a single night. FBI Director Kash Patel described the case as “reminiscent of a Hollywood movie,” but emphasized that the consequences for those involved are very real.

The investigation has already led to more than 30 arrests nationwide, marking one of the most significant crackdowns on illegal gambling in recent years.
