Pokrovsk Under Siege: Ukraine Battles to Hold Strategic Eastern City

A resident walks at a street near buildings damaged by Russian military strikes, in the frontline town of Pokrovsk, Donetsk region.

Ukrainian forces are facing mounting pressure in the eastern city of Pokrovsk as Russian troops intensify their offensive, threatening to encircle the strategic logistics hub. Moscow has deployed approximately 11,000 troops in the region, aiming to break through Ukrainian defenses and seize control of the city.

Pokrovsk, located in the Donetsk Oblast, has become a focal point in Russia’s campaign to dominate eastern Ukraine. After more than a year of grinding advances, Russian forces have infiltrated parts of the city and are pushing north and northwest, attempting to cut off Ukrainian supply lines. The situation has deteriorated rapidly, with reconnaissance confirming Russian units near key infrastructure, including the railway line.

In response, Ukraine has rushed reinforcements to the area. Units such as the 152nd Separate Jaeger Brigade and the 59th Separate Assault Brigade have been actively engaged in counterattacks and drone reconnaissance missions to repel Russian incursions. Despite these efforts, manpower shortages and relentless drone and artillery strikes have made it increasingly difficult for Ukrainian troops to maintain control.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the gravity of the situation earlier this week, describing Pokrovsk as being “on the verge of critical.” Civilian casualties have also mounted, with reports of Russian war crimes including the shooting of unarmed residents near the railway line.

The battle for Pokrovsk underscores the broader challenges Ukraine faces in defending its eastern territories amid dwindling resources and escalating Russian aggression. As the conflict grinds on, the fate of Pokrovsk remains uncertain, with both sides locked in a brutal contest for control of this vital city.
