Russia Launches Massive Air Assault on Ukraine, Killing Five and Hitting Energy Grid

A resident walks near an apartment building damaged by a Russian drone strike in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.

Ukraine endured one of the largest overnight air attacks of the war as Russian forces unleashed a wave of missiles and drones across multiple regions, killing at least five people and severely damaging energy infrastructure.

Officials reported that four of the victims were members of the same family in Lviv, near the Polish border, after their residential building was destroyed. Another person was killed in Zaporizhzhia, where strikes left more than 73,000 residents without power. Fires broke out in Lviv’s industrial park, plunging parts of the city into darkness.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the assault as “another deliberate act of terror against civilians,” noting that energy facilities in Chernihiv and Zaporizhzhia were also struck. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 50 missiles and nearly 500 drones, describing the barrage as part of Moscow’s escalating campaign to cripple Ukraine’s power grid ahead of winter.

The attack prompted NATO member Poland to scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, underscoring fears of spillover into neighboring countries.

As Ukraine braces for colder months, the strikes highlight Russia’s continued strategy of targeting civilian infrastructure, raising concerns of widespread blackouts and humanitarian strain.
