Iran launched a large wave of missiles at Israel early on March 5, forcing millions of Israelis into bomb shelters as the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran entered its sixth day. The strikes intensified an already volatile situation, with explosions reported across multiple regions and tensions rising along the Israel‑Lebanon border.  In Washington, efforts to curb the U.S. air campaign were halted when Republican senators blocked a motion that would have required congressional authorization for continued military action. Sanae Takaichi Becomes Japan’s First Female Prime Minister, Signaling a Conservative Shift

Lawmakers applaud as Sanae Takaichi, center, is elected as Japan's new prime minister during the extraordinary session of the lower house, in Tokyo, Japan, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025.

In a historic moment for Japan, Sanae Takaichi has been elected as the nation’s first female prime minister, breaking a political glass ceiling in one of the world’s most male-dominated democracies.

Takaichi, 64, secured a majority in parliament after her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) struck a last-minute coalition deal, paving the way for her rise to the country’s top political office .  Known for her hardline conservative views and admiration for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, she has long been a prominent figure within the LDP and a protégé of the late Shinzo Abe.

Her election comes at a turbulent time for Japan, with the country facing economic stagnation, rising living costs, and growing security concerns in East Asia. While her victory is being hailed as a landmark for gender representation, critics note that she rarely emphasized women’s rights during her campaign, instead focusing on national security, fiscal policy, and conservative social values .

Takaichi’s leadership is expected to steer Japan further to the right, with potential implications for relations with neighboring countries and domestic debates on constitutional reform.
