Starmer Urges Reversal of Ban on Israeli Fans at Aston Villa Clash

PAOK v Maccabi Tel Aviv - Toumba Stadium, Thessaloniki, Greece - Maccabi Tel Aviv fans inside the stadium

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the decision to bar supporters of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending their Europa League match against Aston Villa in Birmingham on November 6. The ban was imposed after West Midlands Police raised security concerns, citing the risk of protests and referencing violent clashes involving Maccabi fans in Amsterdam last year.

Starmer described the move as “the wrong decision,” stressing that the role of the police should be to ensure all fans can enjoy the game without fear of violence or intimidation. He added that the UK “will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets.”

The decision has drawn criticism from Israeli officials, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar calling it “shameful.” Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is expected to meet with officials in an effort to find a solution
