Tragedy at Sea: Migrant Boat Sinks Off Lesbos, Leaving Four Dead

At least four migrants lost their lives after a boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos, according to the country’s coastguard. Seven survivors were pulled from the water, while search-and-rescue operations continued amid uncertainty over how many people were originally on board.

The incident marks the second fatal shipwreck involving migrants near Lesbos this month, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by those attempting the perilous crossing from Turkey to Greece. Strong winds complicated rescue efforts, and officials noted that communication with survivors was difficult, as many did not speak English.

Lesbos has long been a frontline in Europe’s migration crisis. During 2015–2016, more than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa arrived on Greek shores. Although arrivals had slowed in recent years, a resurgence of crossings has been reported, prompting Greece to tighten migration rules.

This latest tragedy underscores the deadly risks migrants continue to face in their search for safety and a better life.
