Tragedy in Manchester: Police Gunfire Kills Synagogue Worshipper Amid Terror Attack

Police officers work in Langley Crescent, Prestwich, following the Manchester synagogue attack in north Manchester, where multiple people were killed on Yom Kippur in what police have declared a terrorist incident, Britain, October 3, 2025.

British police have confirmed that one of the victims of Thursday’s deadly attack on a Manchester synagogue was fatally wounded by police gunfire as officers attempted to stop the assailant.

The attack occurred outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Jihad al-Shamie, drove a car into pedestrians before launching a stabbing spree. Armed officers shot him dead at the scene.

Two worshippers, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, were killed. Greater Manchester Police later revealed that Daulby had suffered a gunshot wound, believed to have been caused by officers’ efforts to prevent the attacker from entering the synagogue. Another worshipper also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot injury.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson described the shooting as a “tragic and unforeseen consequence” of urgent action taken to protect the congregation. The government has since pledged to intensify efforts against rising antisemitism, as Jewish communities across Britain expressed grief and fear in the wake of the attack.
