Why Interest Rates Matter for Canadians

Interest rates are the single most powerful lever in Canada's economy.  When the Bank of Canada adjusts its policy rate, the effects reach every household—from the cost of carrying a mortgage to the return on a savings account. U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that the White House will host a historic Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event on June 14, 2026—a date that also marks his 80th birthday.

The announcement came during a speech at Naval Station Norfolk, where Trump was commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. The event will take place on the South Lawn of the White House, with UFC President Dana White—one of Trump’s longtime allies—helping to organize the spectacle.

According to reports, the UFC will spend approximately $700,000 to restore the lawn after the fights. Plans also include fighter weigh-ins at the Lincoln Memorial and fan activities across the National Mall, making it one of the most ambitious sporting events ever staged at the presidential residence.

Trump, a frequent attendee at UFC bouts, has long expressed admiration for the sport. His relationship with Dana White dates back to the early 2000s, when Trump’s Atlantic City venues hosted UFC events at a time when few others would.

The White House UFC event is expected to draw global attention, blending politics, sports, and entertainment in an unprecedented way.
