Trump Pushes Ahead with Navy’s 250th Anniversary Amid Shutdown Standoff

Despite a federal government shutdown that has left thousands of employees furloughed and military personnel working without pay, President Donald Trump pressed forward with celebrations marking the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary in Norfolk, Virginia.

Speaking aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, Trump praised the Navy’s history of strength and resilience, declaring that “the show must go on.” The event featured a large crowd of sailors and their families, as well as demonstrations of naval power, including missile launches, SEAL operations, and fighter jet flyovers.

The president used the occasion both to honor service members and to criticize political opponents, blaming Democrats for the shutdown while promising that sailors would receive “every last penny” once the government reopens. First Lady Melania Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Navy Secretary John Phelan joined him for the commemoration.

While the shutdown loomed in the background, Trump framed the anniversary as a testament to American military might and a reminder of the Navy’s central role in national defense. The celebration, at times resembling a campaign rally, underscored his determination to keep high-profile patriotic events on track despite Washington’s budget impasse.
