G7 Foreign Ministers Meet in Niagara to Hear Ukraine’s Plea Amid Escalating War

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario , for high-stakes talks with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister as Russia intensifies its assault on Ukraine’s power grid. The meeting, hosted by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand , comes at a critical moment as rolling blackouts sweep across Ukraine ahead of winter. Foreign ministers from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union posed for a family photo before beginning discussions. Two Years After Oct. 7: Israel Remembers Amid Ongoing Gaza War

Memorial events were scheduled in Israel to mark two years since Hamas's attack .

Israelis gathered on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led assault, the deadliest attack in the country’s history. The coordinated strikes killed around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and saw more than 250 others taken hostage.

Memorial ceremonies were held across the country, many organized by bereaved families rather than the government, reflecting deep divisions over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war and the unresolved hostage crisis. Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza, with only about 20 believed to be alive.

In Gaza, the conflict continues to exact a devastating toll. Israel’s military campaign, launched in response to the attack, has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced millions, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, and humanitarian conditions remain dire.

Meanwhile, indirect talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Egypt this week, with international pressure mounting for a ceasefire and a deal to secure the release of hostages. Yet, with both sides entrenched in their positions, prospects for peace remain uncertain.

For many Israelis, the anniversary is not only a day of mourning but also a reminder of the war’s unresolved questions — from the fate of the captives to the future of Gaza and Israel’s place in an increasingly divided world.
