Air Transat Faces Flight Suspensions Amid Pilot Strike Notice

Air Transat has announced it will gradually suspend flights starting Monday following a 72-hour strike notice issued by its pilots’ union. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing roughly 700 pilots, delivered the notice after nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations with the airline’s parent company, Transat A.T. Inc. Background The union filed the strike notice on Sunday, giving pilots the legal right to walk off the job as early as Wednesday. USS Gerald R. Ford Heads to South America as U.S. Expands Military Footprint

The USS Gerald Ford, which was commissioned in 2017, is the United States' newest aircraft carrier and the world's largest, with more than 5,000 sailors aboard.

The United States has announced a major escalation of its military presence in South America with the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier. The move, ordered by President Donald Trump’s administration, marks one of Washington’s most assertive shows of force in the region in decades.

The Gerald R. Ford, commissioned in 2017, carries more than 5,000 sailors and up to 90 aircraft. It will join an already formidable U.S. presence in the Caribbean, which includes eight warships, a nuclear submarine, and F-35 fighter jets.

Pentagon officials say the buildup is aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks and bolstering security across the Western Hemisphere. In recent weeks, U.S. forces have conducted multiple airstrikes against boats allegedly linked to criminal organizations, drawing both regional concern and questions about the legality of such operations.

The deployment comes amid heightened tensions with Venezuela, whose government Washington accuses of harboring traffickers and undermining democratic institutions. Analysts warn that the arrival of the Gerald R. Ford could further inflame regional unease, while U.S. officials insist the mission is focused on safeguarding stability and protecting American interests.
