Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado Awarded 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, recognizing her decades-long struggle to restore democracy and human rights in her country.

Machado, a prominent pro-democracy activist, was honored “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy”. Despite facing threats to her life and being forced into hiding, she has remained in Venezuela, inspiring millions with her resilience.

The decision came after months of speculation, with U.S. President Donald Trump among the high-profile nominees. Trump had openly expressed his desire for the award, citing his involvement in international peace efforts, but the committee ultimately chose to highlight Machado’s grassroots leadership and her role in uniting Venezuela’s fractured opposition.

The award underscores the committee’s emphasis on sustained democratic movements over short-term diplomatic deals. Machado now joins a historic list of laureates who have shaped global peace through courage and perseverance.

The prize, valued at 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million), will be formally presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
