Air Transat Faces Flight Suspensions Amid Pilot Strike Notice

Air Transat has announced it will gradually suspend flights starting Monday following a 72-hour strike notice issued by its pilots’ union. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing roughly 700 pilots, delivered the notice after nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations with the airline’s parent company, Transat A.T. Inc. Background The union filed the strike notice on Sunday, giving pilots the legal right to walk off the job as early as Wednesday. Last week, pilots voted 99% in favor of strike action , underscoring their frustration over stalled contract talks. ALPA leaders emphasized that pilots do not want to strike but feel compelled to act after management failed to meet demands for a modernized agreement. Airline Response Air Transat confirmed it will begin suspending flights gradually between December 8 and 9 to prepare for a possible full shutdown. The company stated it is working “around the clock” to reach a deal and minimize disruption for trave...

Von der Leyen Faces Renewed No-Confidence Push in European Parliament

Although the motions of censure have almost no chance of reaching the two-thirds majority of votes required to unseat von der Leyen, they could expose more general disquiet over her leadership.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is once again under pressure as both far-right and far-left groups in the European Parliament have tabled fresh no-confidence motions against her leadership. This marks the second such challenge in just three months, highlighting growing divisions within the EU’s political landscape.

The motions, set for debate and vote later this week, are unlikely to succeed since they require a two-thirds majority to pass. However, they underscore mounting dissatisfaction across the political spectrum. The far right has criticized von der Leyen’s “misguided” green policies and handling of migration, while the left has condemned the EU’s stance on Gaza and raised concerns over trade deals with the United States and Mercosur.

Although von der Leyen comfortably survived a similar motion in July, the repeated challenges reflect a shifting balance of power in the Parliament after the 2024 elections, which boosted the far right’s numbers. Analysts warn that while her position is secure for now, the persistence of these motions could destabilize the assembly and complicate the passage of key legislation in the months ahead.
