Speaker Johnson Warns of Record-Breaking U.S. Government Shutdown

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., praises President Donald Trump's peacemaking efforts leading to a ceasefire pausing two years of war in the Gaza Strip, at the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Oct. 13, 2025.  House Speaker Mike Johnson has cautioned that the ongoing U.S. government shutdown could become the longest in the nation’s history, as the political standoff between Republicans and Democrats shows no signs of easing. Now in its 13th day, the shutdown has already shuttered federal offices, closed museums, and disrupted air travel across the country. Zelensky Heads to Washington for High-Stakes Talks with Trump on Long-Range Missiles

                                           Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to travel to Washington this week for a pivotal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where the focus will be on securing advanced long-range weapons and strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems.

Zelensky confirmed that the discussions will center on U.S.-made Tomahawk missiles, which Kyiv has been lobbying for as it seeks to pressure Russia into serious peace negotiations. The missiles, with a range of up to 2,500 kilometers, could allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory, though Zelensky has emphasized they would be used strictly against military targets.

The visit comes as Trump signals a renewed push to end the war in Ukraine, following his recent diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. Both leaders are expected to outline steps aimed at intensifying pressure on Moscow while exploring pathways toward eventual peace.

In addition to his White House meeting, Zelensky is scheduled to hold talks with members of Congress and U.S. defense industry leaders, underscoring Kyiv’s urgent need for sustained military and political support.
