Deadly Russian Strike Hits Kharkiv’s Balakliya, Casualties Include Children

Firefighters at the site of the apartment building hit by a Russian missile strike in the town of Balakliia, Kharkiv region.

A Russian missile strike on the city of Balakliya in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region has left three people dead and at least 10–15 others injured, according to local authorities. The attack occurred in the early hours of November 17, 2025, when two missiles struck residential high-rise buildings, vehicles, and a kindergarten, causing widespread destruction.

Among the wounded were four minors aged between 12 and 17, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the assault. Emergency services rushed to extinguish fires and rescue survivors trapped in damaged apartment blocks. Officials reported that more than seven multi-story buildings and over 15 vehicles were destroyed or severely damaged.

Balakliya, located about 60 kilometers from the frontline, has been a flashpoint throughout the war. The town was initially captured by Russian forces in 2022 but later liberated by Ukraine during its autumn counteroffensive that same year. The renewed strike underscores Moscow’s intensified offensive in eastern Kharkiv, where civilian areas have increasingly come under attack.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that three men were killed in the strike, while survivors suffered injuries ranging from acute shock to burns and trauma. Ukrainian officials condemned the attack as another example of Russia’s deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure.

Elsewhere, Russian drones also struck the Odesa region, damaging energy and port facilities, further straining Ukraine’s already fragile infrastructure.

This latest assault comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues diplomatic efforts in Europe to secure additional military aid and air defense systems, stressing the urgent need to protect civilians from ongoing missile and drone attacks.
