Why Interest Rates Matter for Canadians

Interest rates are the single most powerful lever in Canada's economy.  When the Bank of Canada adjusts its policy rate, the effects reach every household—from the cost of carrying a mortgage to the return on a savings account. With rates currently at 2.25% and significant uncertainty ahead, understanding how rates work has never been more important for your finances. What Is the Bank of Canada's Policy Rate? The Bank of Canada sets the overnight policy rate—the interest rate at which major banks lend money to each other. This rate serves as a benchmark that influences borrowing and lending costs across the entire economy. When the Bank raises or lowers this rate, commercial banks adjust their prime rates accordingly, which directly affects the rates you pay on mortgages, lines of credit, and other loans. The Bank's primary goal is to keep inflation near its 2% target. When inflation runs too hot, the Bank raises rates to cool spending. When the economy slows, it cuts rates...

Russian Forces Advance South of Kupiansk Amid Fierce Battles

Russian forces have reportedly made significant advances south of the Ukrainian city of Kupiansk, according to a Russian commander on the ground. The commander, identified by the call sign “Hunter” and leading an assault detachment of Russia’s 1486th Motorized Rifle Regiment, claimed that his troops had seized an oil depot on the eastern edge of Kupiansk and captured several railway stops along the line toward Kupiansk Vuzlovyi, a settlement located about six kilometers south of the city center.

In a video statement released by Russia’s Defense Ministry, Hunter said his units were also fighting to clear the railway station at Kupiansk-Sortuvalnyi, underscoring Moscow’s continued push to tighten its grip on the Kharkiv region. The reported gains are part of broader Russian efforts to employ pincer movements aimed at encircling both Kupiansk and Pokrovsk in neighboring Donetsk.

Kupiansk, a strategic logistics hub, has long been a focal point in the war. Captured by Russia early in the 2022 invasion, it was retaken by Ukrainian forces later that year in a counter-offensive. Now, Moscow appears determined to reclaim the city, which Ukrainian officials have described as a key target in Russia’s campaign to destabilize the northeast.

While Russia touts its advances, independent verification remains difficult, highlighting the fog of war that continues to obscure the situation on the ground.

The renewed fighting has raised fears among residents of Kupiansk, many of whom endured occupation in 2022. Local accounts describe a city scarred by bombardments, with civilians bracing for the possibility of another prolonged Russian presence.

Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to reinforce supply lines and defensive positions in the region, seeking to blunt Moscow’s offensive. The battle for Kupiansk is likely to remain a critical flashpoint in the months ahead, with both sides viewing control of the city as strategically vital.
