UN Peacekeepers Targeted by Israeli Fire Amid Blue Line Dispute

The "Blue Line" marker near the concrete wall along Lebanon's southern border

Israeli forces opened fire on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon on Sunday, escalating tensions along the volatile border as disagreements deepen over the UNIFIL Blue Line report. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) described the incident as a serious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

According to UNIFIL, peacekeepers conducting a routine patrol near El Hamames were fired upon by an Israeli Merkava tank from a position established inside Lebanese territory. Heavy machine gun rounds landed just meters from the patrol, forcing the peacekeepers to take cover before safely withdrawing. No injuries were reported.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, claiming that the peacekeepers were mistakenly identified as “suspects” due to poor weather conditions. The IDF insisted that the shots were intended as warnings and not deliberate targeting of UN personnel.

The confrontation comes as UNIFIL’s latest Blue Line report highlights growing Israeli violations, including construction of new border walls and military positions inside Lebanese territory. Lebanese officials argue these actions undermine stability and erode the credibility of the ceasefire agreement.

UNIFIL stressed that such attacks endanger its mission and compromise efforts to maintain calm along the border. The peacekeeping force has called for restraint and reaffirmed its commitment to liaising with both sides to prevent further escalation.

This incident underscores the fragile state of the Lebanon-Israel frontier, where near-daily violations have been reported despite the ceasefire. With tensions mounting, the international community is watching closely as the dispute over the Blue Line threatens to destabilize the region further.
