Walid Saadaoui, 38, and Amar Hussein, 52 , were convicted at Preston Crown Court after investigators uncovered their plan to smuggle automatic weapons and ammunition into the UK. Alberta Independence Referendum Question Moves Forward After Official Approval

Aberta's provincial flag flies on a flag pole in Ottawa.

Elections Alberta has signed off on a proposed referendum question that would ask voters whether the province should separate from Canada, marking a major milestone for the group pushing for an independence vote.

The approved question is straightforward: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”

With this approval, organizers must now appoint a financial officer before launching the petition phase. Once underway, they will have four months to gather the required number of signatures to trigger a province‑wide referendum. If they succeed, Albertans could be asked to vote on independence in the coming years, setting the stage for a historic and highly contentious political moment.

The initiative comes amid ongoing debates about Alberta’s place in Confederation, economic autonomy, and federal‑provincial relations — issues that have fueled periodic calls for greater provincial independence.
