Bondi Beach Massacre Investigated as Terror Attack

Australian authorities are probing possible terrorism links after a deadly mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach left at least 15 people dead and more than 40 injured during a Hanukkah celebration. Police confirmed the attackers were a father-and-son duo, Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. Sajid was shot dead at the scene, while Naveed was critically wounded and remains under police guard in hospital.

Investigators revealed that Naveed Akram had been on the radar of intelligence agencies since 2019 due to suspected ties to an Islamic State cell. Authorities discovered an IS-style flag in the attackers’ vehicle, and an improvised explosive device (IED) was also found nearby, intensifying fears that the assault was part of a broader terror plot.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an act of antisemitic terrorism, stressing that it targeted not only Australia’s Jewish community but the nation as a whole. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence.

The shooting, which unfolded in minutes, sent crowds fleeing in panic from one of the world’s most famous beaches. Police and emergency services continue to secure the area, while the Joint Counter Terrorism Team leads a complex investigation into the attackers’ motives, networks, and international connections.

This tragedy has been described as Australia’s deadliest antisemitic terror attack, shaking the country’s sense of safety and reigniting debates over national security and gun laws.
