Nations React to Reported $1 Billion Fee for Trump’s Peace Board

President Trump said the Peace Board 'will embark on a new approach to resolving global conflict'. Reports surrounding President Donald Trump’s proposed Board of Peace have ignited global debate after claims surfaced that countries may be asked to contribute $1 billion to secure or maintain permanent membership. The board, envisioned as a body overseeing governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, would reportedly be chaired by Trump himself, who would hold authority over which nations are admitted. A draft charter circulating among diplomats outlines three‑year membership terms, renewable only with the chairman’s approval. Greece Rescues 545 Migrants in Major Sea Operation

Migrants, found during a search operation off Gavdos island, wait to be transferred to a temporary facility in the port of Agia Galini, Crete.

Greece Rescues Hundreds of Migrants off Gavdos Island

Greek authorities carried out one of the largest migrant rescue operations in recent months, saving 545 people from a fishing vessel off the southernmost island of Gavdos. The operation took place about 16 nautical miles (29.6 km) from the island after a distress signal was received in the early hours of Friday.

The Hellenic Coast Guard, supported by Frontex and commercial ships, coordinated the rescue, ensuring all migrants were safely transferred to the port of Agia Galini on Crete. Officials confirmed that the rescued individuals were in good health and provided with food and temporary shelter before being moved to Rethymno for further processing.

This incident highlights the surge in crossings from Libya, with Gavdos and Crete increasingly becoming entry points for migrants attempting to reach Europe. Greece, which was at the forefront of the 2015–2016 migration crisis, has seen renewed pressure on its southern islands as arrivals rise again.

Local authorities emphasized the scale of the operation, noting that it reflects the growing challenge of managing migration flows across the Mediterranean. In a separate incident the same day, Frontex also rescued 32 migrants from another vessel near Gavdos.

While the migrants are safe, the event underscores the ongoing humanitarian and logistical strain faced by Greece as it balances rescue efforts with the need for long-term solutions to migration management.
