Deadly Blaze Erupts at Swiss Alps Bar During New Year’s Festivities

Crans-Montana, Swiss Alps, Switzerland, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

A New Year’s celebration in the Swiss Alps turned tragic when a fire swept through a crowded bar shortly after midnight, leaving dozens presumed dead and around 100 people injured.

The blaze broke out during peak festivities as guests gathered to welcome the new year. Witnesses reported a sudden flash of flames followed by thick smoke that quickly filled the venue, causing panic as people rushed to escape.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the intensity of the fire made rescue efforts extremely difficult. Authorities say the full extent of the casualties may not be known for some time, as parts of the building remain unsafe to enter.

Local officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Early statements indicate there is no immediate sign of foul play, though all possibilities remain under review.

The incident has shaken the surrounding resort community, which is typically bustling with holiday travelers at this time of year. Support centers have been set up for families awaiting news of loved ones, and regional leaders have expressed condolences as the search and recovery efforts continue.
