Deadly Train Collision Shocks Spain, Dozens Killed

Emergency services at work at the deadly site in Cordoba province.

Spain is mourning after a devastating collision between two high‑speed trains left at least 39 people dead and many more injured. The crash occurred near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba, where a Málaga‑to‑Madrid train derailed and was struck moments later by an oncoming service traveling on the adjacent track.

Rescue teams worked through the night, navigating mangled metal and overturned carriages as they searched for survivors. More than 480 passengers were believed to be on board the two trains combined, and officials warn the death toll could rise as recovery efforts continue.

Investigators are focusing on why the first train derailed on a section of track considered low‑risk and recently upgraded. National authorities have activated mass‑casualty protocols, including specialized forensic teams to help identify victims.

The tragedy has prompted widespread grief and renewed scrutiny of rail safety standards. Government leaders have pledged a full investigation, calling the event one of the darkest days for Spain’s modern rail network.
