FBI Disrupts ISIS‑Inspired New Year’s Eve Plot in North Carolina

The seal of the U.S. Justice Department is seen on the podium in the Department's headquarters briefing room before a news conference with the Attorney General in Washington, January 24, 2023.

U.S. federal authorities say they stopped a planned New Year’s Eve attack in North Carolina, arresting an 18‑year‑old who investigators believe had been preparing for months. According to officials, the suspect had been influenced by ISIS propaganda and intended to carry out violence in the town of Mint Hill, near Charlotte.

Investigation and Arrest

Investigators say the suspect, Christian Sturdivant, had mapped out attacks on a grocery store and a fast‑food restaurant. When agents searched his home, they reportedly found knives, hammers, and handwritten plans hidden under his bed. Authorities say these materials outlined both his targets and his ideological motivations.

Motivation and Charges

Officials describe the plot as “ISIS‑inspired,” noting that the suspect had expressed support for the group and a desire to commit jihad. He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and remains in federal custody.

Officials Praise Coordination

Law enforcement leaders credited quick coordination between federal and local agencies for preventing what they say could have been a deadly attack. The investigation remains ongoing.
