Israel’s Demolition of UNRWA Buildings Sparks New Diplomatic Rift

Israeli forces dismantle UNWRA’s Jerusalem headquarters in East Jerusalem.

A new wave of tension has emerged in East Jerusalem after Israeli authorities demolished several buildings inside the compound of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The operation, carried out with heavy security, targeted structures used by UNRWA staff and support services.

UNRWA officials denounced the demolition as a violation of international norms protecting UN facilities, saying their personnel were removed from the site before bulldozers moved in. The agency warned that the incident undermines the safety of humanitarian workers and sets a troubling precedent for international organizations operating in conflict zones.

Israel has long accused UNRWA of misconduct and has sought to curtail its activities, particularly in Jerusalem. The latest demolition is widely viewed as part of a broader effort to limit the agency’s presence in the city.

The move has drawn swift criticism from diplomats and humanitarian groups, who argue that escalating pressure on UNRWA will further destabilize an already fragile environment. As political fallout grows, the future of the agency’s operations in Jerusalem remains uncertain.
