Nationwide Outcry Erupts After ICE Shootings Spark Mass Protests in Minneapolis

San Diegans protest ICE after shootings in Minneapolis and Portland

Tens of thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Minneapolis this weekend, joining a rapidly expanding national protest movement against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The unrest follows the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37‑year‑old woman killed by an ICE officer during an encounter on Wednesday. The incident has reignited deep tensions in a city still shaped by the trauma of previous police violence.

Protesters marched through downtown Minneapolis carrying signs, chanting for accountability, and demanding an independent investigation into Good’s death. While most gatherings remained peaceful, police declared an unlawful assembly late Friday after clashes outside a local hotel led to nearly 30 arrests.

The anger intensified after a second ICE‑related shooting in Portland, Oregon, where two people were wounded on Thursday. The back‑to‑back incidents triggered coordinated demonstrations in cities including Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, and San Diego, with organizers calling for sweeping changes to federal immigration enforcement practices.

Local leaders in Minnesota urged calm, warning that violence could undermine the movement’s message. Still, many residents expressed fear and frustration, saying the shootings reflect a broader pattern of aggressive federal tactics. Many who joined the march said the presence of federal agents has left communities feeling unsafe.

As protests continue to grow, calls for transparency and accountability are mounting — setting the stage for what could become one of the most significant national debates over immigration enforcement in years.
