Trump Calls on Iranian Protesters to Persist as Crackdown Intensifies

A demonstrator lights a cigarette with fire from a burning picture of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranians to continue nationwide demonstrations, declaring that “help is on its way” as the country faces its largest wave of unrest in years. His message, shared on social media, came amid a sweeping crackdown by Iran’s leadership, which has struggled to contain protests driven by economic hardship and political frustration.

Trump encouraged demonstrators to “take over your institutions” and document abuses, while announcing that all meetings with Iranian officials would be halted until the violence against protesters stops. When asked what form U.S. assistance might take, he declined to provide details.

The protests, fueled by the collapse of the Iranian rial and worsening living conditions, have resulted in significant casualties. Despite internet restrictions and communication blackouts, reports of clashes and arrests continue to emerge.

Trump’s remarks add international pressure at a moment of deep internal turmoil for Iran’s government.
