Winter Under Fire: Russian Strikes Plunge Ukrainian Cities Into Darkness

Ukranian emergency services battled a number of fires after an intense wave of Russian strikes.

Russian missile and drone strikes have once again battered Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving parts of the country without heat or electricity during freezing winter temperatures. At least four people were killed in Kharkiv, where residential areas and power facilities suffered significant damage. Kyiv and several other regions also experienced widespread outages as emergency crews worked through the night to restore essential services.

Ukrainian officials reported that the assault involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, overwhelming parts of the nation’s air‑defense systems. Although many projectiles were intercepted, the scale of the attack caused fires, structural damage, and prolonged blackouts.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the strikes as part of Russia’s ongoing effort to break civilian morale by targeting critical infrastructure. He renewed calls for additional international support, particularly advanced air‑defense systems, to protect Ukraine’s cities from future attacks.

As temperatures continue to drop, authorities warn that repairs may take days, leaving millions vulnerable in the harsh winter conditions.
