A Month of Meaning: Welcoming the Start of Ramadan

Ramadan begins on Tuesday, marking the start of one of the most spiritually significant periods in the Islamic calendar. Observances begin at sundown, with this year’s holy month officially kicking off on Tuesday, February 17, according to reporting on the 2026 lunar calendar cycle.

For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a time to deepen spiritual reflection, strengthen community bonds, and practice self-discipline through fasting from dawn to sunset. The month emphasizes compassion, generosity, and mindfulness—values highlighted by community leaders who note the importance of supporting others during this sacred period.

The start of Ramadan is traditionally determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, a process closely followed across countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and India. This year’s moon-sighting efforts have guided communities in confirming the beginning of the fast, reinforcing the shared anticipation that accompanies the holy month.

As families prepare for pre-dawn meals, nightly prayers, and communal iftars, Ramadan continues to serve as a reminder of gratitude, empathy, and renewed purpose—values that resonate across cultures and communities worldwide.
