Midweek Ice Threat Looms as Dense Fog Settles Over the Region

Periods of fog are expected Tuesday morning for Waterloo region and Guelph, with near-zero visibility reported in some areas. Environment Canada said visibility may suddenly drop at times before improving later in the morning.

A murky start to Tuesday is setting the tone for what could become a disruptive stretch of midweek weather. Dense fog has settled across the region this morning, reducing visibility and slowing the commute. While the fog will gradually lift through the day, it’s only the opening act for a more serious hazard on the horizon.

Forecasters are warning that a significant freezing rain event is expected to develop on Wednesday. As a surge of warm, moist air rides over subfreezing surface temperatures, conditions will become ideal for ice accumulation. Even a thin glaze can turn roads, sidewalks, and untreated surfaces dangerously slick, and heavier icing could lead to tree damage and power outages.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, prepare for potentially hazardous travel, and plan ahead for possible disruptions. With fog today and freezing rain tomorrow, the week is shaping up to be a challenging one for anyone on the move.
