Mojtaba Khamenei’s Rise Sparks Market Turmoil as Hardliners Mobilize

People attend a gathering to support Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, in Tehran, Iran, March 9, 2026.  Iran’s hardline factions mounted a powerful show of support for newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei , rallying across Tehran in a display that signaled a tightening of conservative control and diminished hopes for de-escalation in the Middle East.  The demonstrations, marked by mass gatherings and imagery linking Mojtaba to his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, underscored the regime’s consolidation at a moment of heightened regional conflict.  Analysts warn that the hardliners’ unified backing suggests Iran is unlikely to soften its stance amid ongoing tensions with the U.S. and Israel. Iran Rejects Claims of Attacks on Cyprus

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has firmly denied reports that Iran launched any attacks toward Cyprus, Turkey, or Azerbaijan in recent days. Speaking at a press briefing, Baghaei stated that “no offensives were initiated from Iranian territory” and suggested that some of the alleged strikes may have been “staged” to create tension between Iran and neighboring countries.

Baghaei reiterated that Iranian forces did not fire drones or missiles at any of the three nations, countering accusations—particularly from Azerbaijan—that Iranian drones had crossed into its territory. He emphasized that Iran’s defensive actions should not be interpreted as hostility toward regional states and warned that adversaries might be attempting to “drive a wedge” between Iran and its neighbors through fabricated incidents.

The spokesperson’s remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and conflicting reports about drone activity near borders. Iran maintains that any claims of aggression are unfounded and part of broader misinformation efforts.
